Mini pop-up expo study room
Discover how University of Amsterdam students researched the historic layers of paint and the colors used in the house.

The study is the most original space in the Rietveld Schröder House. For 100 years, this room has maintained the same function and decor. So the ideal space for researching the original finishes.
Do your own research
Seven students from the master's program Conservation and Restoration of Historic Interiors (University of Amsterdam) investigated here, on behalf of the Central Museum and the Rietveld Schröderhuis Foundation and in cooperation with the National Office for Cultural Heritage (RCE), the many overpaintings since construction. Did you know that some wooden parts in this room have been repainted up to 14 times?
This so-called Architectural Finishes Research (AFR) not only looks at color, but also at texture and shine. Using a scalpel, the researchers made so-called stratigraphies, also known as color ladders. In this way, they expose the pigments and layer structure of the paint.

In this temporary mini exhibition, you will see examples of these types of color ladders and monsters and you can examine them yourself. In addition, you can see what else is involved in this research and what research equipment and tools are used for this. The presentation can still be visited until August 23 with a valid museum ticket.
