Rietveld Day 2026
Discover colourful stories that bring Rietveld's heritage to life during the Rietveld Day!

On Sunday, June 28th, we celebrate Gerrit Rietveld's 138th birthday with the annual Rietveld Day. This year's edition is themed around colour.
Most people associate Rietveld and De Stijl with primary colors, but did you know that the first version of his famous Red and Blue Chair didn't have any colour at all?
Discover more fascinating stories about Rietveld's use of color, go on a color hunt yourself, or have a triochromatic colour photo taken!
Analog pop-up photobooth

Have a unique three-color group photo taken with the Rietveld Schröder House as a backdrop.
Using a special analog technique, three black-and-white photos are created through red, green, and blue filters. Together, these layers form a colour photograph. This was one of the first methods for creating photographs in colour.
- Photo sessions from 11:00 AM
- Processing on the same day
- Pick up your photo between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM

Discover colour stories in the house
Visit the Rietveld Schröder House for free this day and experience the interior during a brief visit.
In six spots in the house, you'll discover surprising stories about the use of colour. You might not expect that the color green plays an important role in this residence. Come and find out why!
Go on a colour hunt
Look at your surroundings with different eyes and go on a color hunt in and around the Rietveld Schröder House or on your way there.
Choose a primary color and make it the focal point of your photos. Perhaps you'll spot a person passing by in a bright yellow t-shirt, a facade with a yellow-striped awning, or another object or detail in the colour of your choosing.
By looking this way, you'll experience how deliberately Rietveld used colour: not as decoration, but as a well-thought-out and functional part of the design. For example, in the house, the parts you touch are dark-coloured, so you don't see stains or dirty fingerprints. At the same time, the coloured horizontal and vertical lines enhance the sense of space and emphasize the three dimensions: height, width, and depth.
